US State Laws

Numerous US states, including Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania are actively considering privacy legislation. For updates, see (for example) the International Association of Privacy Professionals’ legislation tracker.

There is currently no comprehensive federal privacy legislation in the United States. Sector-specific legislation, such as the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule are included on their respective topic pages.
